This Red Fox pauses next to lichen covered rocks near Greenhorn Park in Yreka, Calif.
This was a very complicated painting to do in watercolor because each blade of grass had to be blocked out with masking fluid and light washes applied over the grass area in successions of washes and masking fluid until the whole area was done. The fox was then masked out next. I then painted the rock background and when that was complete, I removed the masking fluid and painted the fox using very small brushes.
